The Reborn Doll story began around 1990 when doll enthusiasts wanted more realistic baby dolls. In 2002 the first Reborn baby went on Ebay, there was a lady in the US who hand painted a store bought Berenguer baby doll to resemble a human baby with hand-applied hair she then listed this on Ebay she called it a REBORN baby, the baby doll was described as being Born ~ again. It is believed that this is where the term Reborn Baby came from… this caught on & now Artists who Reborn babies are now known as Reborners.
Popularity of these Realistic Reborn Baby dolls has now created the new evolution of doll craftmanship and the Reborn Doll industry has emerged and is growing exponentially. Depending on the Baby Doll they can range in price from the hundreds to even thousands of dollars. The traditional vinyl Berenguer baby dolls are still very popular with Reborners & Collectors today, with Ltd Ed or La Newborns being highly sought after. Along with these adorable babies there are a vast variety of silicon~vinal doll kits available in all sizes which have been especially created for Reborners by Doll sculpting Artisans worldwide, these dolls come in disassembled and unpainted {blank} ‘Kit form’ in either Limited Edition or regular runs. Reborners are then able to create their magic by enhancing the babies by painting Hairing & weighting the babies to resemble a real human baby with exceptional attention to every detail.

I'M ALWAYS ASKED, Who buys Reborn babies?
Because of their realistic nature, The process of buying a Reborn Baby can for some simulate an adoption process, rather than a prosaic sale of a product. As part of this, the dolls come with fake Birth Certificates or Adoption certificates. These Reborn dolls are usually taken quite seriously by their newly adopted parents and it’s not uncommon for them to be cared for like an infant.
There are many consumers of reborn dolls who have dolls specially made to resemble their child or children or even grandchildren.. where others who love baby dolls both young and old collect or have reborns as they would any other regular doll.
Whilst others purchase them to fill a void of a lost child and may treat reborns as living babies. In these special cases these little Reborn Angels are able to assist some mothers in the grieving process and help bring resolution comfort and peace back to their lives.
For what ever the reason, this is an addictive habit wether you are a collector or Reborner like myself.. These babies are quite adorable and their realism adds to the intrigue that surrounds these lovely babies.
WHAT TYPE OF DOLLS ARE THEY?
Most types of vinyl dolls can be used for reborning. Dolls vary by size, shape, and materials, making some more desirable or popular than others. According to Kevin Titterton of Doll Reader Magazine, Berenguer Babies, Zapf, Lee Middleton, Secrist Dolls, & now many more are doll companies that make dolls which are easy to transform into reborns. For Cathy’s babies she prefers to use Specialized Reborn doll kits, leaning toward Limited Edition or open edition molds as well as the Berenguer new born types for her reborning treatments.
Kathryn Peck of Doll Reader Magazine explains that with Berenguer Babies, it is because the dolls already resemble human babies in their expressions, body shapes, surface materials, and other lifelike attributes that they lend themselves perfectly to the Reborning process. "Preemies" that Cathy Reborns are smaller dolls molded after real premature infants sizes can range from 14 to16 inches and for the Specialized Reborn Baby Doll kits sizes can range anywhere from 10 inches, to the popular 16 ~ 22 inches {newborn real size} right up to 26 ~ 42 inches the size of a real toddler & 5~6 year old child.
CREATING A REBORN BABY
The process of creating any Reborn doll {play or collectable} typically involves a number of steps.
This technique is best achieved by using heat set oils, the medium of choice for all of the babies created in ~Gods Little Reborn Angel Nursery~. Each baby is lovingly hand painted with the artist creating delicate skin tones with exceptional details, that include veining, capillaries, milk pimples, mottling, tiny fingernails & finely painted hair or ‘Micro hand rooted’ hair that is applied each single hair at a time with a felting needle to created the natural ‘real hair’ look to the baby. Finally each baby is then specially weighted throughout to feel like your holding a new floppy baby.
The painting process itself can take days to build & develop; for the Berenguer Baby the doll is taken apart and any factory paint is removed. For the Specialzed doll kit this step is not required.
Then a mauve & green color wash may be applied to each vinyl part to give the appearance of realistic baby skin undertones. The outer layer of the vinyl doll is given its skin tones and details by adding dozens of layers of flesh colored paint, the doll parts must be heat set by baking them inside an oven or by using a heatgun after each layer of paint is applied. Lighter skin tone dolls can take fifteen to thirty layers, hours upon hours to apply.The affects of the mauve & green wash, combined with the numerous layers of skin tones, create the REAL appearance of babies skin complete with the veins and mottled, pressure marks. And For the toddlers or life size child dolls freckles really make the children look complete. To further enhance the real effect manicured shinny nails, dribble, tears and other details are added to complete this painting process.
The next step is to apply hair. The hair can either done in a few ways; painted or microrooting and for the larger toddlers wigging is also done. When painting the hair this is painted using a brush with only a few hairs to give the fineness of real baby soft hair. Where as with microrooting, the Mohair or human hair is applied strand by strand with a felting needle. This can take up to thirty or more hours per head. Once the hair is finished, the original vinyl body is weighted and the soft body is filled with poly pellets (for a childs doll) or glass beads for the collector. The weighted baby filled with glass beads corresponds with its age to achieve a real weight effect. Reborns heads are also weighted, so that owners have to support the head like one would a real newborn.
OPTIONAL EXTRAS
Purchasers may also have rare earth magnets attached inside the mouth or head for attaching a pacifier or hair bows. ***However these are VERY powerful magnets and people with pacemakers, or being near certain electronic devices may be harmfull.. Not all reborns contain magnets & if they do they can easily be removed by the Reborn Artist if needed.
Other electronic devices can also be applied to the body of the doll that mimic a heart beat, or make the chest rise and fall to simulate breathing by customers request.

Gods Little Reborn Angels Nursery cares about your beautiful Reborn Baby and we want to ensure that your baby maintains its original pristine condition for years to come. Please follow these few simple instructions when caring for your new baby. If cared for properly, your Reborn Baby will bring many years of joy to your and yours.
A good rule of thumb for handling a Reborn Baby is that you should handle her/him in any way you would handle a real newborn baby.
Your Reborn Baby should be kept out of the heat and the cold. Extreme heat could damage the vinyl and destroy your reborn. She/he should never be left in a hot car or displayed near any type of heat source. Baby should always be kept in dry conditions as excessive moisture, may cause eventual damage to the doe suede cloth body.
Your Reborn Baby’s hair is very delicate it has been micro hand-rooted with mohair. It has been glued the inside of her/his head to help keep it from coming out. To avoid any hair fall I suggest that you treat the hair with gentle care, Should baby’s hair become dusty, it can be gently brushed to remove the dust with a soft babies brush.. Mohair has a tendency to bunch and mat so extreme gentleness should be used when combing out mats. I’d suggest placing your finger or other hand on hair near the root and brush the other end gently. It is best to also avoid handling your babies’ eyelashes. Although the eyelashes are glued in and should ever come loose, if the unforseen happens return to Reborn Artist for reapplication.
Your Reborn Baby wears clothing that can be carefully removed for washing if needed. Use great care not to pull on the limbs and tear the seams while changing your baby. You can gently turn your baby’s head and limbs, but you must not use force.
IMPORTANT HEALTH INFORMATION:
Your baby may come equipped with a magnetic pacifier or bow. These magnets are very powerful earth magnets. They should not be used near any electronic or computer equipment and they should never be used near someone who has a pacemaker.

Her facination and joy in creating these babies grew and before long her Reborn Babies were finding homes throughout Australia. As a portrait & still life painter in stylised realism, Cathy adopts her knowledge of painting & portraits to the creation of her reborn babies paying special attention to every little detail that gives these little ones the ‘look of being so incredibly real’ Cathy also teaches a weekly Reborning doll class for those enthusiasts who would like to create their own OOAK baby.
